KNFB Reader Now for Android Device Users!

The KNFB Reader is an app that provides scan and read technology in a portable easy to use format for people with vision or reading disabilities.  This app will take a picture of almost any printed document and then read it out loud to the user almost instantaneously. Back on November 6, 2014, Jeannie highlighted the KNFB Reader application for iOS mobile devices and some of the features it offers.  You can learn more about the details in her blog.

So, for all those KNFB Reader fans on Androids….the wait is over!  Since October 2015 the KNFB Reader has been available for Android.  The layout on the Android is the same as on iOS, with little to no major differences.  In addition to the Android version of the app, they have added some new capabilities for both iOS and Android.

These newer features include:

  • Take Picture from Stand Profile Allows you to place your device on a recommended stand and have pictures of text taken automatically.  This works well to quickly scan large numbers of pages.
  • Link to Dropbox This feature works well when users want to capture a lot of data, file storage or for easy file sharing. Now when users scan a document, it can be instantly saved in a Dropbox folder tied the user’s directory.  Users can retrieve documents from Dropbox after they are deleted from their smartphone or other device. These files remain in Dropbox so  don’t have to save on your device.

What Android devices support the KNFB app?

Because there are so many different Android devices available for the company to test as well as create a list of all the compatible Android devices, here are some of the good selections KNFB Reader narrowed them down to:

  • Optimal experience Android device with a hexa or octa core CPU, an 8 megapixel camera, and Android 5 or 6.
  • Less optimal (KNFB Reader will run, but user will notice reduced speed and accuracy). An Android device with a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, a 5 megapixel camera, and Android version 4.3.

Where to purchase KNFB Reader?

The KNFB Reader app for Android may be obtained at the Google Play Store.  The exciting news is that users can download a FREE trial version first and process up to 25 documents before needing to purchase the full version at $99. So no more waiting KNFB Reader fans on Androids.  With a free trial version, this makes it possible to see if this is the best portable assistive technology for your needs.
