Time for the Longest Day of the Year – June 21

As we near June 21, the longest day of the year, I have become aware of The Alzheimer’s Association’s fundraiser for this day.  The association asks that you show your love on June 21 for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.  They have created a fundraising event that both symbolizes the daily challenges of Alzheimer’s and honors those who battle these challenges daily.  They have many suggestions on how you can help at www.alz.org/thelongestday.

This day of awareness made me think of daily living assistive technology available to assist caregivers and those with Alzheimer’s.  I want to focus this blog on the clocks that are sold to help with confusion of time.  I am listing a few clocks below that can assist with not only time but with reminders and even with voice-activation for those with vision loss.

American Lifetime Clock:

Black clock with white letters and numbers. Includes day of the week, time of day, time, date

American Lifetime Clock

DISPLAY: Digital display with time, full day of the week, month, date in large clear letters

ALARM: Up to 3 alarms

POWER SOURCE: AC & Battery

COST: Approximately $50

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS CLOCK: I personally own this clock and love that it has everything I need to know in an easy-to-read display.

iGuerburn Talking Day Clock

DISPLAY: Digital display with touch screen announcing and displaying the time, full day of the week, month, date in large clear letters

ALARM: Up to 8 alarms

POWER SOURCE: AC

COST: Approximately $60

EXTRAS: Supports six different languages, talking clock

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS CLOCK: I like that this has a touch screen option to hear the time.  This device also has a slot for an SD card and slot for a USB cord so that a person can use this as a digital display for photos.

MedCenter Interactive Talking Alarm Clock

Small gray clock with 4 buttons on top. First button is green with Talk, second button is blue with Alarm, third button is yellow with a image of a lightbulb, and fourth button is red with Alarm Acknowledged.

MedCenter Interactive Talking Clock

DISPLAY: Digital display with buttons on top with time, day of the week, date in large letters

ALARM: Up to 6 alarms

POWER SOURCE: AC and battery

COST: Approximately $50

EXTRAS: Buttons on top of clock for Talk, Alarm check, Light, and Alarm Acknowledged.  You can even record your own personalized messages/reminders.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS CLOCK: While the display is not as clear as some of the other clocks, I do like the buttons on the top of the clock.  For some seniors, this may be less confusing because it may be similar to a clock they have used in the past.  I also like the ability to personalize the messages.

Moshi Desk Clock

Small clock with white base and blue display. The clock numbers for the time are black

Moshi Clock

DISPLAY: Digital display with time and nightlight

ALARM: Up to 3 alarms. Alarm sounds give choice of chime, chirp, or bell.

POWER SOURCE: AC and battery

COST: Approximately $50

EXTRAS: 12 separate voice commands which include time, date, alarm, and temperature

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS CLOCK: Moshi is a cute clock that will allow a person to get information by voice and also set Moshi by voice.  There is an earlier blog on Moshi at  http://ndipat.org/blog/setting-the-date-a-moshi-how-to/

Reminder Rosie

White framed clock with black background and gold numbers indicating time

Reminder Rosie

DISPLAY: Digital display with time

ALARM: Ability to record up to 25 reminders

POWER SOURCE: AC and battery

COST: Approximately $80

EXTRAS: Talking clock, voice or manual operation. Records and announces multiple loud personalized voice alarms at a specific time and date; everyday, weekly, monthly and annually.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS CLOCK: A person can set up to 25 reminders and record them for a personalized touch.  You can set these reminders for specific times and days.

DAY and NIGHT CLOCK

Analog wall clock with cutout indicating day or night

Day and Night Clock

DISPLAY: Analog Clock that tells whether it is day or night for wall

POWER SOURCE: Battery

COST: Approximately $90

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS CLOCK: This clock will probably work best for someone who wants an analog clock but also needs to know whether it is day or night.

Don’t let the longest day of the year be confusing for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.
